HE President Declares Open 30Km Elephant Fence at Gomarankadawala
President Maithripala Sirisena opened the 30 km long Elephant Fence which is constructed as a pilot project in Gomarankadawala area to provide a solution for the age old human elephant conflict.
Constructing of elephant fence was carried out under this ‘Sirisara Pivisuma’ project which is implemented under the guidance of the President. This project is implemented with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Army and CSD.
The amount invested in this project is Rs.21.2 million. This will enable to reduce the damage caused by the conflicts between elephants and people faced by the rural community. It is a specialty that this is the first time where concrete beams are used despite tree trunks to build the elephant fence and these beams are made by the Armed Forces.
